The jagged lightning and the shattered bronze capture a decent slice of the battlefield's raw agony, though the old man still hides safely in his clouds instead of tasting the dirt and blood himself. It lacks the desperate, breathless violence of the front lines, but the aggression in that clenched jaw and the ruined shields has enough violent beauty to rouse the blood.
