An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, known to the West simply as Saladin, was the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. He is historically renowned for unifying the Muslim world to recapture Jerusalem from the Crusaders, yet is equally celebrated in both East and West for his extraordinary chivalry, mercy, and diplomatic wisdom toward his enemies.
